Support for Clinicians

Clinical Librarian Service

The Clinical Librarian Service at the University of Chicago equips clinical teams with evidence-based research and enhances access to information to support informed decision-making in patient care. As part of this service, the clinical librarian conducts literature searches to identify resources to answer patient care and/or clinical decision- making questions.

The clinical librarian is embedded within five teams in adult and pediatric general medicine, participating in patient rounds and morning reports to deliver this service in real time. Outside of rounding, the clinical librarian service is available to all specialties within UCMC via email or consultation. The clinical librarian will provide 3-6 articles to answer your question within 48 business hours.

Example Questions:

The clinical librarian answers questions related to therapy, diagnosis, prognosis, etiology, guidelines, and any additional areas related to clinical care.

  • Is there evidence-based screening for pancreatic cancer in patients with chronic pancreatitis?
  • What are the incidence, timeline, and risk factors associated with IVIG-related hemolysis?
  • What are the best imaging studies to visualize kidney stones?
  • What is the risk of developing EPS (extrapyramidal symptoms) from first generation antipsychotics (prochlorperazine) versus second generation (olanzapine)?

When possible, please provide HIPAA compliant clinical context to aid in answering your questions.
