What is ORCiD?

ORCiD (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a type of author identifier.  ORCiD aims to solve the name ambiguity problem in research and scholarly communication by creating a central registry of unique identifiers for individual researchers and an open and transparent linking mechanism between ORCiD and other current researcher ID schemes.

Why should I register for ORCiD?

There are a few reasons to register an ORCiD id:

  1. Some journals require it: if you are publishing interdisciplinary scholarship, you might be required to provide an ORCiD.
  2. Reduces discovery issues caused by name ambiguity: if you have a common name or if your name is represented in different ways in your scholarship (e.g., including a middle initial or due to name change), ORCiD can help bring all of your scholarship in one place.
  3. Integration with HeinOnline: HeinOnline is an incredible resource, but its scope is limited to law reviews and traditional law journals. With the integration with ORCiD, you can see works from HeinOnline on your ORCiD author page, and works on your ORCiD author page will appear on your HeinOnline Author Profile, capturing your books and interdisciplinary scholarship.

How do I create an ORCiD?

Registering an ORCiD id is straightforward.

  1. Go to the registration form
  2. If you intend to connect your HeinOnline Author Profile to ORCiD (recommended), Visibility must be set to either Trusted Parties or Everyone.
  3. Click the Terms of Use box, then click Register.
  4. You’ll receive an email asking you to confirm your registration. Confirm your registration per the instructions in the email.
