Open Access

In partnership with Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA), UChicago Library helps support arXiv at the Champion level. arXiv is a research-sharing platform that hosts articles in eight major fields, including physics, mathematics, and computer science.

In partnership with BTAA, UChicago Library helps fund this primary source collection on the histories of civil rights activism by the citizens of Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian American/Pacific Islander communities. This material, once published, will be made freely available.

UChicago Library is helping to fund the CEU Press and Liverpool University Press to publish their frontlist content OA through the Opening the Future initiative.

UChicago Library is helping to fund the OA journal Demography, published by the Duke University Press.

In partnership with BTAA, UChicago Library participates in the MIT Press Direct to Open (D2O) initiative. This initiative will allow all new MIT Press scholarly monographs and edited collections to be published OA. It also provides access to the entire backfile of MIT Press monographs during the duration of the agreement.

In partnership with BTAA, UChicago Library contributes to OACIP. Hosted by LYRASIS, OACIP "provides a community-driven framework that enables multiple stakeholders (including funders, institutions, libraries, authors, and editors) to efficiently and strategically evaluate and collectively fund open access content initiatives."

UChicago Library helps fund the OBP open access ebook initiative. Our membership benefits include DRM-free access to all formats of their ebooks.

In partnership with BTAA, UChicago Library helps fund OLH to publish peer-reviewed OA scholarship without charging an APC. The OLH publishing platform supports academic journals from across the humanities disciplines, as well as hosting its own multidisciplinary journal.

UChicago Library has committed five years of support to punctum books, which is a “scholar-led, queer-led, and peer-reviewed diamond open-access (OA) academic book publisher devoted to academic and para-academic authors working in any field in the humanities, social sciences, fine arts, and architecture & design who want to publish books that are genre-bending and which take experimental risks with the forms and styles of intellectual writing.”

Researchers can publish OA for free in the journals that participate in the SCOAP³ (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics) initiative.

In partnership with BTAA, UChicago Library participates in the UMP Fund to Mission Program. The goal of this program is to convert at least 75% of UMP's monographs to open access by the end of 2023. This program gives all UChicago students, faculty, and staff access to all UMP ebook titles, including perpetual access to all ebooks published in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
