Open Access

This guide discusses open access, its significance, and how UChicago Library supports it.

Journal Publishers' Transformative Agreements

The University of Chicago Library has entered into transformative agreements (also known as Read and Publish agreements), which enable UChicago faculty, students, and staff to publish their research as open access (OA) without the need to pay an article processing charge (APC). Unless otherwise stated, all OA articles covered by these agreements will be published with a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) license.

In the following descriptions, hybrid journals refer to subscription journals that provide authors with an option to publish OA with the payment of an APC. Gold OA journals means that the journals make the published content OA immediately upon publication. Explanations of terms related to OA publishing are available from this glossary compiled by ChronosHub.

UChicago authors who have questions about transformative agreements or would like to publish OA with journals that charge an APC are welcome to contact the Transformative Agreements Working Group for consultation.
