Using OSF for Research Projects

This guide provides an overview of different uses of OSF such as managing research projects and sharing research outputs.

How to Create and Manage a Project

With OSF, you can create a project and use the free online space to store and share files with specified collaborators.  A project is made up of "components," which allow you to categorize different types of content systematically.  You can make your project visible online or keep it private.  A public project receives 50 gigabytes of storage for free while a private project has a storage of 5 gigabytes.  With regard to the storage location, there are four options for the user.

A project can be connected to external online tools for cloud storage and citation management.  The connections make it easier to sort and find files for the project.  Additionally, you can add collaborators to the project and specify the permission level for each collaborator.  Last but not least, you can use a wiki to document project details and support information sharing among the collaborators.

The first video below walks you through the process of creating a project and managing its settings.  The second video shows you how OSF can facilitate research collaboration.

OSF also offers guides on other project-related topics:

Please note that OSF is not HIPAA-compliant and should not be used to store research data with personally identifiable information.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Center for Digital Scholarship.
