Innovation Clinic Research Guide

This guide is intended for students enrolled in the Law School's Innovation Clinic.

Purpose of this Guide

The purpose of this research guide is to provide an overview of resources for doing legal research as a student in the University of Chicago Law School Innovation Clinic. Be advised that some of these sources are available through the D'Angelo Law Library for UChicago Law School Students only.

General Legal Research Tips

  • Start Broad and Then Narrow: When researching a new legal concept or body of law, it's better to start broadly and then narrow your search. You can do this by starting your search with a good secondary source like:
    • Treatises
    • Legal encyclopedia
    • Practice guides (e.g. IICLE or Practical Law)
    • Law journal articles
  • The Table of Contents is Your Friend: When using a secondary source or code, it's a good idea to browse the table of contents, since it will give you a better idea of the context of the issue you're researching.
  • Ask for Help: if you have been researching the same concept or issue for more than 30 minutes and are not getting anywhere, please contact a reference librarian via Ask a Law Librarian
