Searching ICPSR

The basic search in ICPSR is a keyword search of the dataset descriptions, variables, subject terms, and citations to articles that used ICPSR data.

  • Enter multiple words to find all of your search terms.
    • educational attainment
  • Phrases must be in quotes.
    • "General social survey"
  • Separate terms with commas to search for study variables.
    • household, income, sex
  • The minus sign can be used to exclude terms. Results may be inconsistent.

 

Using Limits

ICPSR offers several ways to limit your search from the results page. You can limit by:

  • Subject
  • Geography
  • Data Format (check here for online analysis)
  • Type of analysis (quantitative, qualitative, or GIS)
  • Time Period
  • Recency (when data were uploaded or updated)
  • Restrictions (use this to exclude restricted datasets)

Searching for Variables

ICPSR has approximately 75% of the variables used in studies available to view online. You can also see the survey question response for these without having to download the dataset.
