Library Orientation for International Students

Citation Management

The Library provides instruction on and access to citation management tools. Programs such as EndNote and Zotero  collect records or citations from research databases (indexes, catalogs, etc.) that you can then organize for your research projects. They also help you cite your research by creating bibliographies, citations, and footnotes automatically.

Why should I use a citation management tool?

  • To stay organized
  • To prevent transcription or typographical errors
  • To ease citing and creating bibliographies

Borrow and Renew

Borrow

Students of the University of Chicago can borrow unlimited items from the library for quarter-long loans. To borrow most Library items via our Paging & Pickup service, you present your UChicago Card or other library card.

Renew

To renew loaned items, log in to My Account in the Library Catalog and select Checked Out Items.

Students can renew regular loan items online three times. Once you reach the renewal limit, you must bring the items back to a Circulation desk to be renewed. Quarterly loans may be renewed starting the Monday after the quarter ends.

Interlibrary Loan

If the book you need is checked out, or if it is not owned by the University of Chicago Library, you can request the item via interlibrary loan services.

Submit your request to Interlibrary Loan and we’ll get a copy as quickly as possible. Our automated system will determine the fastest and best way to get you the item,  When possible, Interlibrary Loan will provide expedited delivery in roughly 10-12 days for items available from partner libraries at Big Ten Academic Alliance and Ivy Plus universities. Most loan periods are for 12 weeks. 

Paging & Pickup

If you are on campus and are interested in obtaining a print book, DVD or other items from the Library's collections, our Paging & Pickup service may be an option. You can request items as needed through the Library Catalog, and the Library will fill up to five requests per patron per day. Our goal is to make materials available within three business days. Items will be checked out to you by staff before pickup. Just bring your UChicago ID to the circulation desk at Regenstein Library.

Scan & Deliver

If you only need a chapter or two of a book, you can use our Scan and Deliver service to request a free scan to be sent to you.
