Center for Research Informatics (CRI)

The University of Chicago Center for Research Informatics (CRI) supports researchers in the Biological Sciences Division and contributes to research and education in bioinformatics. Acquiring Clinical Data
CRI runs the Clinical Research Data Warehouse, which holds clinical data dating back to 2006 and enables queries for the purpose of cohort discovery.
Analyzing Data
The CRI Bioinformatics Core helps researchers analyze complex data efficiently by offering services, expertise, and high-performance computing resources.
Managing Data
CRI operates and maintains REDCap, an online platform that facilitates the creation and administration of surveys and databases. Additionally, CRI offers REDCap-related educational resources.
Storing Data
CRI provides secure and encrypted storage for sensitive research data.

Research Computing Center (RCC)

The University of Chicago Research Computing Center (RCC) provides UChicago researchers (who are not affiliated with the Biological Sciences Division) with high-end computing resources for distributed computing, shared memory computing, and emerging technologies such as accelerators and big-data systems. Midway2
Midway2 forms the second generation core of RCC's advanced computational infrastructure. It includes a large pool of servers, software, and storage that researchers can utilize to increase the efficiency and scale of their computational science.
Data Visualization
RCC, in partnership with the University of Chicago Library, has developed a Data Visualization Laboratory in the Kathleen A. Zar Room at the Crerar Science Library. The room is currently equipped with two projector systems, one for 2D and one for passive stereoscopic 3D. Also provided are high quality tools for analysis of research data, large screen visualization, education, and interactive and remote visualization in the context of supporting research on campus.
Storage and Backup
RCC hosts and maintains a number of storage systems. Users have access to both persistent high-capacity storage that can be shared among a research group or remain private to each individual user and to high-performance storage when data needs to be temporarily staged and accessed quickly.
Software
RCC installs, configures, and maintains hundreds of software packages on the RCC cluster, Midway2.
Workshops and Training
RCC provides workshops and training on a wide variety of high-performance computing topics.
Consulting and Technical Support
RCC consultants can help you learn how to port and compile your code, submit jobs, and develop custom workflows to manage hundreds or thousands of calculations.

Server Hosting

On-Campus Server Hosting
With on-campus server hosting, IT Services can oversee data and applications on a managed server for complex and simple computing needs.
Amazon Web Services
UChicago faculty and staff have access to AWS as a secure, cloud service platform. The services provide the University community with a full set of computational infrastructure.

Transferring Big Data

Developed by the UChicago Computation Institute, Globus enables quick, secure, and reliable transfer of large amounts of data. The video below provides an introduction to Globus.
