What is MLA style?

MLA is short for the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, a guide to citation and style produced by the Modern Language Association.

Who uses MLA?

MLA style is the dominant citation style for fields in the humanities.  However, it may be used by scholars in other fields.

Is the MLA Handbook available online?

The Library only has a print copy (the online version is not available via institutional subscriptions).

Does it matter which edition I use?

You should always use the most recent edition unless told otherwise.  The latest is the 8th edition (2016).

Does MLA require footnotes/endnotes?

MLA uses parenthetical citation with a works cited list. However, some publishers or instructors may prefer references listed in notes.
