Research, Resistance and Representation: Books Born from the BMRC Archives

About the BMRC

The Black Metropolis Research Consortium (BMRC) is a Chicago-based membership association that works to expand access to its members’ collections of archival materials that document African American and African diasporic history, politics and culture, with a specific focus on materials relating to Chicago. Our expanding consortium of 26 members include universities, libraries, museums, community, arts-based and government archives. It is the mission of the BMRC to connect all who seek to document, share, understand and preserve Black experiences. The BMRC was founded in 2006 at the University of Chicago, which serves as the consortium’s host institution. Our offices are located on the 2nd floor of the Regenstein Library.

About the Collection

Since 2009, the BMRC has provided one-month residential fellowships in our members archives to scholars, artists, writers, and public historians through its Summer Short-term Fellowship Program. After conducting research at BMRC member institutions, Fellows create new, original research and art that illuminates the national and international importance of Chicago’s African American and African diaspora communities. In addition to dissertations, articles, documentary films, photographic exhibitions, and musical compositions, this fellowship has resulted in over 30 published books, some of which are on display here. You can learn more about the BMRC, our program offerings, and view the full list of books on our website.

You can view the display collection, which includes many of the books featured on this guide, on the first floor of Regenstein Library.
