The University of Chicago Library has 13.5 million volumes in print and electronic form for you to use for your academic and personal interests. The resources on this page will help you locate and access books both within our collection and at partner institutions from around the world.

How many books may I check out?
UChicago students may check out as many books as needed.

Do I need a Library card?
Your UChicago ID is your library card.

How long can I check out a UChicago Library book?
The UChicago Library has one due date per quarter, meaning if you check out a book this quarter, it is start at the beginning of the next quarter. Normally, books are auto-renewed up to three times. After the third time, you must bring back the book to the Library.

How long can I check out a book from another library (via interlibrary loan)?
Normally 16 weeks, but loans may be shorter depending on the library that owns the item.

Can I request a book for pickup?
Yes, you can request an item for pickup directly from the Library Catalog record. Please note that pickups may take up to 5 days. Often it is faster to retrieve the book from the shelf yourself.

What if a book is not on the shelf?
Look for a library staff member (student shelver) in the bookstacks–they can make sure you are in the right place. Alternatively, you can request the book for pickup and we'll find it for you!

What if I need a book from the D'Angelo Law Library or Social Work Library?
Request the book for pickup at Regenstein Library.

How do ebooks work?
