Geophysical Sciences Resources in the Library

The book and journal collections in geophysical sciences are located in The John Crerar Library. Current periodicals (about 1500) and reference sources are on the first floor. Books, bound journals, and serials are on the third floor.

The collection is diverse, representing all subjects in the atmospheric and earth sciences. The traditional interests of the Department of the Geophysical Sciences and the Committee on Evolutionary Biology have shaped the development of the collection. Graduate texts, research monographs, and journals are emphasized. Older books and serials are retained in the collection and in particular holdings of 19th century european academies and societies are extensive.

Regional strengths are in North America, Europe, Russia and other areas of the the former Soviet Union, and Eastern and Southern Asia. Material originating in Latin America and Africa are less prevalent.

Acquisitions have been more selective in the following areas or formats: applied or engineering topics, field guides and manuals, remote sensing and satellite imaging, geodesy and surveying, hydrology, and ocean science. Geologic maps are generally located in the Map Collection in Regenstein Library.

See the full Collection Development Policy Statement for more detail.

Off-campus Access

Almost all Library databases can be accessed from off-campus. The easiest way to do this is to use links from the Library website. You will then be prompted for your CNetID and password to authenticate yourself as an authorized user.

If you find sources through Google Scholar or other search engines, you may not automatically get access to Library resources. Use the ProxyIt bookmarklet or Libkey Nomad in these situations. There's more information on these in our guide to off-campus access.
