What is Beta

Beta is used as a means of describing therisk of investing in a stock relative to the market as a whole. A beta greater than one indicates the stock is more volatile than the market while a beta less than one menas the stock is less volatile.

Sources for beta

ValueLine Investment Survey The current CD-ROM version of ValueLine is on reserve in Regenstein and the software is loaded on loaded on computer near the reference desk. Older versions of the CD-ROM are in the fourth floor digital media collection.

OneSource. From the Company Profile page, select Ratio Comparisons or Financial Health as an option under Financial Reports.

Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage. Select Company Profile, type in name or ticker. Beta is listed under Valuation.

Bloomberg Available in the Hyde Park Center and Gleacher Center computer labs. Find beta using the commands Ticker Beta Go. Bloomberg allows you to choose your time period and index for calculating beta.

Factiva Go to Companies/Markets and find your company. Choose reports, then Ratio Comparison Reports. This shows five year beta as well as industry and sector betas. There is no way to determine what other comapnies are included in those segments, however.

Yahoo! Finance Look up your company and select"Key Statistics". Beta is under trading information. However, it is not available for all companies.
