Below are some starting points for searching or locating catalogs for libraries around the world. If you need help finding a library catalog for a specific institution abroad, please contact a librarian.
- WorldCat (OCLC) This link opens in a new windowWorldCat is a database that allows researchers to search the combined catalogs of hundreds of libraries around the world. It contains more than 52 million records for books, journals, audiovisual materials and more. This source can help researchers find items, verify citations, and identify which libraries hold a particular title.
- European LibrariesThe Conference of European National Librarians (CENL). A portal to the print and digital resources of 47 national libraries of the member states of the Council of Europe. Catalogs of more than 250 collections are searchable or browsable. Federated searching permits the user to specify which collections are searched.
- LibWebFrom the Berkeley Digital Library, a list of library catalogs and websites online.
- List of National Libraries (Wikipedia)Visit the websites for specific national libraries for access to their catalogs, collection databases, and finding aids.
Archives
Below are some resources to help you identify collections in major archives in other countries. However, many smaller archives will not have searchable finding aids or guides, or may have very limited information about collections on their website. Occasionally, there are print bibliographies or guides listing collections in specific archives. You can search for these in the Library Catalog or WorldCat. But often, you may have to reach out to the archive directly for more information.

Researchers searching ArchiveGrid can learn about the many items in each of these collections, contact archives to arrange a visit to examine materials, and order copies.
- UNESCO Archives Portal This link opens in a new windowAn international gateway to information for archivists & archives users
- ProQuest Dissertations & Theses This link opens in a new windowDissertations often have rich and detailed bibliographies that can help you identify the locations of unpublished archival or manuscript material.
- British Library Archives and ManuscriptsThe search tool for the British Library's archives and manuscript collections.
- List of National Archives (Wikipedia)List of central archives maintained by various countries, including links to websites, where available.
- Fresh From the ArchivesA great website providing detailed tips to visiting archives around the world, including practical matters such as transport and computer access.
- Using Archives: A Guide to Effective ResearchThis guide by the Society for American Archivists can help you understand how archives function, how to identify appropriate archives for your research, and how to conduct research in archives.
