Information on accessing datasets at ICPSR

Restricted data in ICPSR

Many of the datasets in ICPSR have restrictions on access, typically because there is enough personal information included in the data that it can be used to identify individuals. These will be noted in the study description.

You must apply for access to these datasets, which is done through the study page on ICPSR. These are the general requirements for access, which may vary by study.

  • Appointment at the University and the Principal Investigator must have a terminal degree (PhD, MD or JD). Students who wish to use restricted data must be sponsored by a PI with a terminal degree.
  • Approval from the IRB.
  • A security plan, detailing how access will be secured when data are delivered.
  • Roster of people who will have access to the data.
