When classes at the University of Chicago are in session, we are open until 5:45pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. We are not open Saturday or Sunday.

Locate and Request Rare Books and Manuscripts

This tutorial shows how to find rare books using the Library Catalog, and then how to request them for use in the Special Collections Research Center's reading room.

Many of the items used in class come from the Ludwig Rosenberger Collection of Judaica. You can search this collection online using the Advanced Search option, choosing Special Collections as a location, and then the Rosenberger Collection as a collection within that location.

There is also a scanned version of the 1971 catalog that was made of Mr. Rosenberger's collection available online:

Another named collection is the Harry and Branka Sondheim Jewish Heritage Collection.  You can locate items donated by the Sondheims by choosing the Advanced search option, entering "Harry and Branka Sondheim Jewish Heritage Collection" in the search box and choosing "Notes" from the drop-down menu of options after the search box.
