SOSC 13300: Social Science Inquiry

A guide fors students in Elizabeth Williamson's Social Science Inquiry section (Spring 2016)

The University of Chicago Library provides access to a wide variety of ebooks in the social sciences.  You may locate these ebooks searching the Library Catalog.

Because the Library provides access to ebooks from a variety of vendors and publishers, downloading methods and policies vary.

This page lists guidelines on downloading books from the Library's major collections. For more information, contact the Ask a Librarian service.

Within the EBSCO eBook Collection, downloading policies will vary from book to book. You may be able to:

  • Download a chapter/section or up to 60 pages of an ebook in PDF format (with no expiration date).

Check Out & Download Complete EBSCO eBooks

Many EBSCO ebooks can now be checked out for 14 days and read offline. This enables you to download complete ebooks and open them in Adobe Digital Editions software (free download).

Log in to your EBSCOhost account (create an account) and click the "Download (Offline)" button:

Not all ebooks displaying this link will be available for download. If an ebook cannot be downloaded, the following message will display:

Complete instructions for checking out EBSCO ebooks are available in the EBSCO Knowledge Base.

The Library subscribes to two different collections of ebrary ebooks, and policies on downloading vary. To download an ebrary book or portion of a book, you must first sign in with your ebrary account (sign up for a free account).

  • For select titles, you may download the entire book and view it for 14 days through Adobe Digital Editions (free software installation is required).
  • For other titles, you may download only 60 pages.

Unfortunately, there is no way to tell when viewing a book's record whether it is available for full download for 14 days or whether the 60-page limit applies. For more information about downloading see the ebrary Support Center pages on downloading chapters or pages as PDFs and downloading entire ebooks.
