Keyword Searching

Using keywords:

Select "Go to the Catalog", then "keyword search" and enter terms in the "all fields" box. These terms do not need to be in a set order. Results will be by default organized by relevance; you can switch the list to newest first or oldest first.

For example:

  • austria city planning
  • corbusier criticism
  • urban beautification chicago
  • jacobs AND (urban renewal)

Using Subject Headings

An efficient way to search in the library catalog, WorldCat or any database of articles is to use subject terms, which are standardized. Subjects can be combined to narrow a search focus: Wright, Frank AND Chicago. Or to broaden: (city planning OR urban renewal) AND architecture.

In the library catalog, use the BROWSE index and select "SUBJECT" from the drop-down menu.

Some sample searches:

  • city planning--austria  (list of subjects will further subdivide geographically, by time period, by type of publication)

  • le corbusier, 1887-1965  (note subheadings for "bibliography" and "criticism and interpretation")

  • urban beautification (subdivisions by country and city following main heading)

  • jacobs, jane  SUBJECT and urban renewal ALL FIELDS
